Mad March

I know this is very late but March and April have been very hectic.

I was lucky enough to get a subcontract to photograph nearly 1000 products for a company that make ATM parts and as you can imagine this took up a lot of my time.

Ive done product photography before but not on this scale, it was like a military operation. Each product was stored in the warehouse which needed to be located, photographed, boxed back up and put back into the warehouse. This was quite time consuming but at least it was a good workout!!

The products varied in sized from tiny screws to massive electronic components that took two people to lift, this made the job a lot more interesting and I become fascinated with all the different parts, I am a geek at heart.

As all the images need to be on a white backdrop the best way to to achieve this was to use my Lastolite HiLite backdrop, I then placed the products on a sheet of glass between two chairs as this way you can shoot at a angle and then there is less work in the editing process.

I have also been photographing a variety of PR photos for various clients including The Dorset Chamber, Coles Miller and Inspire.

One of my favourite jobs this month has been photographing some delicious food for local pub ‘The Quay’. The only issue with photographing food is that it makes me hungry! But they were nice enough to let me have the chicken wings after I’d finished photographing them.

I know that the best light to photograph food is natural light however typically on the day of the shoot it was cloudy and dull so I used my studio lights and soft box to created some light without being too harsh.

To make sure that the shadows aren’t too harsh I used a vey high tech piece of equipment – tin foil wrapped around a sheet of card! This helps bounce the light and gives a more natural look. I am really enjoying food photography at the moment and it is definitely something id like to do more of. I often find myself scrolling instagram looking at other food photographers and being very inspired, some of my favourite people to follow are David LoftusJamie Oliver and even the food network page. I alway find looking at other photographers pages/photos makes me want to do better and helps push me into learning and doing more which can only be a good thing.
